We are currently in a sermon series I call “Identity – Who we are as a church.” In the past few months the Lord has really been dealing with me about who we have been and who we are to become as a church. While it is true that we are not who we once were, we are also not who God wants us to become. The Mt. Vernon Church is in a time of transition, and as we all know, times of change are never easy. I believe God wants to do something incredible in and through this church, but that means that we must intentionally invest ourselves into the work of the Kingdom. No single individual can grow this church. The Bible says that we are to be “Laborers together” in the Kingdom. I believe if we will own the vision the Lord has laid out for us and be sensitive to His voice He will bring about a miraculous transition in our lives and in our church.
The vision God has placed in my spirit is that we are to be a church that:
- Desires to be led by His presence rather than driven by programs.
- Prefers mission over maintenance.
- Focuses on our destiny over our history.
- Chooses the unpredictable over what we have planned.
- Fosters a culture of mercy rather than judgement.
God is doing a new thing at Mt. Vernon Church of God. I believe He desires to change OUR church culture so that we can change the culture we live in. Our prayer must be “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, (in me) as it is in Heaven.”
